 Laurie
O’Brien began her career in cake decorating at an early age. She
learned the basics of the trade while working at a Baskin Robbins in
Northern California during high school. Laurie always had an interest
in decorating the cakes at the shop, and would buy decorating magazines
and create outrageously decorated ice cream cakes. While attending UC Santa Barbara, a part-time job at a local bakery provided Laurie with the opportunity to cultivate her skills as a cake decorator. After receiving her BA in 1997, Laurie decided to put Psychology on hold and further explore her passion for the pastry arts, where she worked with some of the finest pastry chefs and cake artists in Santa Barbara. It was during this time that Laurie not only developed her decorating skills, but learned the art of baking as well. After 12 years in Santa Barbara, Laurie moved to San Diego in hopes of starting her own specialty cake business. She began by making cakes from home for friends and family, and the word quickly grew. In 2005, less than a year later, she started For the Love of Cake, specializing in decorated cookies and cupcakes, birthday, wedding and special occasion cakes. Laurie’s business quickly grew and in a few years she had outgrown the commercial kitchen space she rented. Her reputation for creating over-the-top, 3D sculpted cakes created a need for a larger work space. For the Love of Cake opened its retail location in 2009, providing a favorable atmosphere for meeting with clients and for selling pastries and cakes to go. Today, Laurie and her three wonderful assistants make hundreds of specialty cakes every year, creating memories and delicious edible art for happy clients all over San Diego County. In the Community

For the last four years, For the Love of Cake has participated in the Coeur de Cuisine, an annual event benefiting charities of the Escondido Rotary Foundation. We have recently expanded our services to provide specialty cookies, cupcakes, and a variety of gluten-free products to several local restaurants and markets.
